seeking discomfort
New video, me competing in a traditional Indonesian “greasy pole” competition here —
Why did I start a writing-lifestyle-adventure channel?
It’s an oft-conceived stereotype that authors are pasty, antisocial people who sit in their basements and shy away from the world outside. In reality, some of the most profound writers I know also lead the most beautiful, rich, and diverse lives.
I want to make a channel that can showcase a creative, fun, wholesome lifestyle that encourages people challenge themselves, get into the world, and connect to those they love.
This video specifically delves into DISCOMFORT. I give a rather embarrassing and hilarious example of getting OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Usually, there is a lot more to gain and a lot less to lose by doing this.
Think about it — virtually every story worth telling is about someone thrust into an unfamiliar situation. We love seeing characters go there because it’s an essential part of growing as a human being. We’ll watch characters struggle, face their greatest fears, go out on a limb, but often we’re afraid to do so ourselves.
I encourage you to get out there and try something outrageous, out-of-character, or even scary. There’s much less to fear thank you think.
Check out the VIDEO ABOVE to see me jump into a “greasy pole” climbing competition in an Indonesian village and receive lots and lots and lots of laughter from the locals.
WRITING UPDATE: I am 35% through with the first draft of the Glass-Wielder Chronicle, again with a slower pace of more like 1,000-1,200 words a day, aiming to pick that up again now that we’re solidly in act 2.
Interested in being a beta reader? I’m currently seeking beta readers for Blink of the Four Winds. I welcome anyone from any background to read. I want honest feedback about what you like, don’t like, and how the story makes you feel. Reach out to me at hadrian.pollard@gmail.com with the subject titled “BETA READER” for more info.
